River Light Recreation Area
Even though this is a beautiful spot as it stands there is always room for improvement with the community applying for grants to remove the noxious weeds along the river and to revegetate it. Not only is this a priority but also important is to provide seating and bbq areas for picnickers to relax and enjoy the wonderful ambience of the river. One of the future plans is to restore the Heritage listed Old Road Bridge and Brick Kiln Chimney to their former glory. There is a working party of the Hamley Bridge Community Association Inc. formed for this express purpose and already the first plantings have started. Though this is a long term project due to the complexity of some of the project the results are starting to show and it will become a showcase not only for the Town to enjoy but all those that pass through Hamley Bridge.
Waste Water Treatment Plant and Water Reuse
Currently the Wakefield Regional Council is in the process of fundraising to replace the effluent ponds situated out of town with a new Waste Water Treatment Plant that will be buried in the ground (3 tanks) near the Old Car Bridge Gilbert St and enable the community to reclaim the water once treated. To enable this to happen an old dam site adjacent to the River Light is being transformed into a wetland and storage area for the treated effluent water which is A class water (no smell and totally safe for irrigation purposes) where it will be filtered by the reeds first then pumped to a few of the major water uses in the Town. This will not only benefit the environment by not taking the water for irrigation from the River Murray but also benefit the Clubs and Organisation involved in a reduced cost of water. At this stage of the project the beneficiaries will be the Primary School, Recreation Centre, Bowling Club and the public gardens on the corner of Gilbert and Light Sts, with the resource in the future to expand the number of irrigators. The projected timetable for completion of the Waste Water Treatment Plant and Wetlands is April/May 2007.
Historic and Heritage Walk
Currently there is a brochure that points out the significant buildings and businesses of the Town's history which is getting updated and the community is working on having plaques outside of each point of call of the walk with the aim to be included in the Heritage Trail that operates in the area.
